UNITAR/WTO Workshop on International Trade and the Doha Round

Summary
4 - 8 December 2006

Coordinator: Sarah Rosengäertner

Objectives
Against the background of the suspension of the Doha Round in July 2006, the workshop aims at elucidating participants on the multilateral trading system, the institutional structure and function of the WTO, and the Doha agenda. It will equip delegates from Permanent Missions in New York to make substantive contributions to the work of their governments related to trade negotiations and trade policy.

Organization
The workshop will be divided into two parts with the first of five days being devoted to an introduction to the international trading system, the WTO and the issues of the Doha round. The following full and half-day sessions will deliver more detailed information on these issues, focusing on: the negotiations on agriculture and non-agricultural market access (NAMA), trade in services (GATS), the participation of developing countries in the multilateral trading system (special and differential treatment, implementation issues, aid for trade), the TRIPS and TRIMs Agreement, WTO rules relating to regional trade agreements, anti-dumping, and dispute settlement within the WTO.

The issues will be presented from various perspectives. Each session will have a specified question and answer period. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to engage in an inter-active simulation exercise.
