This event was presented in follow-up to the successful 2006 UNITAR-UNCTAD joint FOSS event in which FOSS was introduced as a technology with the potential to help drive local software development efforts and spur the growth of local technology economies in developing countries. The focus of this seminar was to present case studies from across the globe of FOSS solutions implemented in varied fields of development activity, such as SME activities, science and education, governance or ICT industry and services development. Case studies provided insight into the policy, strategic and practical issues that led to the choice of FOSS-based or hybrid ICT solutions in each case. Analysis and critical assessment of the replicability of the case studies followed with further practical information on potential implementation in other localities and environments.
