DOALOS/UNITAR Briefing on Developments in Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea: Marine Biological Diversity beyond Areas under National Jurisdiction

In connection with the second meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction (Working Group), the briefing co-organised by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) / Office of Legal Affairs, and UNITAR will provide an overview of relevant issues, in particular in the context of the work of the General Assembly in this field.


Objectives


To equip participants with the necessary background information in order to prepare for the second meeting of the Working Group, the briefing will:

  • Highlight the mandate of the General Assembly in ocean affairs and the law of the sea, with a particular focus on marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction. Information on the establishment, mandate and outcomes of the first meeting of the Working Group will be provided, as well as an outline regarding the mandate of the second meeting of the Working Group, scheduled for 28 April - 2 May 2008, and the main issues presented in the report of the Secretary-General prepared for the meeting;
  • Address recent developments in other relevant fora in order to provide a broader perspective on some of the issues that may be addressed by the Working Group meeting.
